Shaw's Corner

Welcome to Doug Shaw’s family website, by whatever route you arrived. Someone wrote recently that a family website, like a personal memoir, was an exercise in vanity.  There may be more than a little truth in that but having read the entries in my great grandmother’s penny notebook dated 1891 I had a wonderful sense of re-living history and wished that she had written more. So this site attempts to redress our ancestor's shortfall by providing a miscellany of fact and speculation covering a range of subjects and interests with which we have been involved over the years.  If you don’t wish to proceed further then Cheers anyway !

Otherwise browse at your pleasure by clicking on the links in the table below.  I trust that your journey uncovers something of interest and will prove to be worth the effort.

Penny poses prettily When this site was first launched we were guilty of neglect in that we omitted to include this important member of the family on the Home Page.  So may we introduce Brumber Hill Persephone I, otherwise known as Penny - our Border Terrier guard dog and burglar savager.

Penny is ten years and six months old,  an inveterate charmer and is thoroughly spoiled.  She has also had a forum on the internet for a number of years now and gets quite a lot of email.  She is in love with Rosie the cat next door.  Rosie has been brought up with dogs and so has absolutely no fear when the two confront one another in the garden.  Penny, for her part, is thoroughly bemused by this behaviour and so resorts to the age-old doggy maxim "When in doubt, lick it."  On the right is Rosie, lurking in the wisteria in the hope of meeting up with Penny or of befriending the birds who

visit the feeders suspended below.  The judicious application of water spray in Rosie's direction is usually sufficient to tell her that her latter, friendly tendency is frowned upon by humans.

RIP Rosie: Sadly Rosie misjudged traffic conditions when crossing the road and has gone to join her ancestors.

Rosie lies in wait
